Tea drinking dates to the third millennium BC in China but was popularised by the Portuguese culture. Princess Catarina de Bragança, in the 1860s, was responsible for introducing the leaves to the English court, as well as Chinese porcelain and cutlery. However, the concept of 5 o'clock tea only began to appear years later, around 1840, thanks to the Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, who began to invite various people to her ritual. The custom spread beyond the castle walls and began to be enjoyed by the entire English population, and at all hours.
