The history of late tea goes undeniably through Portugal. It was the Portuguese who introduced it to Europe, brought from Asia where it was already commonly consumed. It was in the 17th century when Catherine of Bragança, daughter of King John IV married King Charles II of England and took the habit of drinking tea to England. Later, in the 19th century, the beginning of the traditional afternoon tea is attributed to Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Belfort, who liked to have a small snack at 5pm before dinner. In this snack, besides sweets, tea with milk was served. She began by inviting people to join her and, spontaneously, the habit spread. First, within the court, and then it became popular.
This is a tradition that has been going on for centuries, and nowadays the afternoon tea has gained many fans also in Portugal. We leave you here some suggestions of the most exquisite and delicious afternoon teas.
